Our Turfs
Broadleaf carpet grass or Buffalo, is the most popular grass in Cairns region. It requires at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day to grow. It is well adjusted to our climate and easy to maintain.
This type of turf is low and slow growing. It's perfect to use on embankments that can't be mowed easily. Matrella has a fine leaf, is dark green in colour, suits all soils and is shade tolerant.
Nara is native to Australia and adapts well to sandy soils. It is salt tolerant, relatively low in maintenance and has a high drought resistance that makes it great grass to grow along the coast.

‘Sustainability today and in the future’: the phrase that sums up the turf operations at Tropical Lawns.
Turf is nature’s form of erosion control; it sequesters carbon the same as trees and provides a significant cooling effect to our environment. It reduces glare and noise, traps rainwater, assists aquifer recharge, helps degrade pollutants, and is an effective form of fire control.
In short, it has many environmental qualities that benefit our daily lives.
On the negative side, a lush green lawn requires water, nutrients and maintenance inputs through mowing. These inputs need to be reduced to very low levels; this is where Tropical Lawns’ approach is focused today and beyond.
An active program of identifying turf species and varieties that require much less water, minimal fertilising, and reduced mowing is the basis of this turf operation. Government policy will likely continue to reduce the watering of lawns and maybe ban it altogether. This furthers the quest for grass types that grow well with rain, turn brown in drought, bounce back with rainfall and grow weed-free and quickly. Some of those lawns already exist in nature, and the quest is to find improved versions.
Cairns is characterised not by hot weather, as many think, but by a humid monsoon season and lengthy periods of heavy cloud cover. It is normal not to see the sun for a month but only for a day. Temperatures in Jan/Feb can be 40 deg C in Melbourne and only 27 deg C in Cairns, but with 90% + humidity. In this unique climate zone, local selection of grass types is critical; the job is always done well at Tropical Lawns.
